Jokioinen Museum Railway will commemorate the 90th birthday of Hyvinkää-Karkkila railway locomotive number 5 by publishing on Sunday 17.6. a picture postal stamp of the locomotive. Stamps will be for sale at Minkiö station cafe
The picture in stamp is drawn by a long term volunteer and a steam locomotive engineer of Jokioinen Museum Railway PTJ Koskinen.
The locomotive on the stamp, the number 5, was built by Tampella locomotive works in Tampere Finland and it was the first locomotive completed in newly independent Republic of Finland in the end of December 1917.
The locomotive served its working life at 45 km long Hyvinkää-Karkkila railway in years 1918-1967. After the railway closed down the locomotive was donated in 1969 to predecessor of the Museum Railway Association. The locomotive was repaired by volunteers in Forssa and it started the heritage train operations in Finland in 1971 by pulling the first preserved train in the country. In 1979 the locomotive was taken to VR shops in Hyvinkää for complete two year overhaul.

The cosmetically at Jokioinen Museum Railway restored steam locomotive number 3 of Hyvinkää-Karkkila railway was transported back to Karkkila on Saturday 21.10. 2006. The locomotive was placed on display in the lobby of the city hall of Karkkila.
The locomotive weighting about 35 tons was lifted in Minkiö with help of two mobile cranes and loaded on a flatbed truck. In Karkkila the locomotive was lifted atop of about 30 m long temporary track that lead through a hole made on the wall of the city hall. The locomotive was the pushed in its place with a tractor. The Karkkila city hall is an ex foundry of Högfors that was before served by Hyvinkää-Karkkila railway. Indoors the locomotive will be also protected against the elements and vandalism.
The locomotive number 3 was built by Tampella locomotive works in Tampere Finland in 1910 with a builders number 157. The builders plates were accidentally changed with another locomotive already at the builders and the locomotive has always been carrying wrong builders number 158. The locomotive weighting about 35 tons in working order is the first locomotive of type Hb 68 (LT). There were total of 3 similar locomotives built, all for Hyvinkää-Karkkila railway. The sister locomotive number 4 was built in 1911 and number 5 in 1917. Number 4 was scrapped in the beginning of 1970's and number 5 is operating at Jokioinen Museum Railway.
Number there is technically same as Loviisa-Wesijärvi number 6, but the locomotive has not a separate firewood and water tender. Number three has instead of that side tanks for water and small fuel bunker at the rear end of the locomotive for the firewood.
Originally number three was put on display at Karkkila bus station with three railway cars straight after the railway was closed down. Then the locomotive pulled its train on the location by a makeshift track made by track panels laid on the town streets. The locomotive and cars were transferred in 1993 to Jokioinen Museum Railway. The Museum Railway Association repaired cosmetically the locomotive and got the three railway cars for that work.

On 15th of October 2006 -for the first time after 1959- The Jokioinen Railway locomotive number 5 ran on its own power on the tracks of Jokioinen Railway.
The locomotive which was transported from Wales to Finland in the beginning of October was fired up on Saturday evening and the full operating pressure of 13 kg/cm2 was reached on Sunday morning. During the previous weeks the locomotive had undergone modifications to be able to run on Jokioinen Museum Railway. For example an original steam brake system was rebuilt and couplers changed.
On Sunday the first test run was made to Jokioinen. JR 5 pulled easily a four passenger car test train over there and back. In the afternoon JR 5 got to real work by pulling a 8 car mixed train from Minkiö to Humppila to take some of the rolling stock in the winter car shed.
The locomotive crew for test trains was engineer Juha-Pekka Viitanen and fire man Georg von Pfaler. The locomotive performed well on the test runs.
The JR 5 locomotive was sold to Great Britain in 1972 and later rebuilt to operating condition at the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway, where it was given a name "Orion".

The former Jokioinen Railway steam locomotive number 5 will return at her home at Jokioinen Museum Railway after nearly 35 years in Great Britain. At the locomotive shed of Jokioinen Museum Railway the number four, a sister locomotive of the number five is already waiting.
The locomotive which was before used at Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway arrived at the harbor of Harwich on Friday 29.9. at 13.30 hours local time and was loaded on board M/S Estraden of Man Lines at 17.00 hours. The estimated arrival time of the ship at Turku harbor is on Tuesday 3.10. at 06.30 hours. The locomotive will be moved the same day on road transport to Jokioinen Museum Railway depot at Minkiö.
The locomotive was built at the Tubize workshop in Nivelle, Belgium in 1948 and bought by Jokioinen railway to replace their newest and most powerful Henschel locomotive which had to be given to Soviet Union because of war payments of Finland were late of schedule.
Number five was used together with its sister locomotive number four to haul heavy goods trains of Jokioinen Railway until 1960s and until 1951 also to pull the passenger trains. JR 5 was removed of service in 1964 because of cracks in its firebox and until 1972 it was placed in a small hut built around the locomotive at Jokioinen station.
In 1972 the Tubize was bought by an Englishman who aimed to renovate the locomotive placed then in Wisbeck. However the owner had to give up the locomotive and the Tubize was bought by Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway.
At WLLR the number five was staying for few years on display, until in the mid 1990s the renovation work started. A new firebox was made and the locomotive was completely overhauled. In autumn 2000 everything was ready and the locomotive was running again.
Because of its large size and heavy weight the locomotive was however not suitable for a hilly WLLR with some tight turns, and in the beginning of 2006 the WLLR informed they are willing to sell it.
After long negotiations in the beginning of September a four man group of Jokioinen Museum Railway left for Llanfair to inspect and test drive the locomotive. Soon after this the contract was made and the locomotive will arrive in Finland on 3.10. after almost 35 years abroad.
